Chiropractic care is an integral part in the prenatal and postpartum stages of pregnancy. As the pregnancy progresses, strain of the pelvic and spinal structures combined with changes in your gait and center of gravity can set the stage for back and neck pain. Additionally, as labour approaches, your body secretes a hormone called relaxin, which causes ligament laxity. This may exaggerate the effects of an existing spinal or pelvic problem; causing further joint stress, pain, and discomfort. Chiropractic care during pregnancy has been shown to alleviate pain and discomfort by maintaining alignment of the spine and pelvis, optimizing baby positioning and minimizing complications during birth.
According to recent studies, chiropractic care may result in an easier pregnancy by increasing comfort during the second and third trimester, reducing labour times, and decreasing the potential of back labour. Chiropractic care has also been shown to reduce the likelihood of postpartum depression and help control symptoms of nausea and acid reflux.
Benefits of chiropractic care during pregnancy:
- Maintain a healthier pregnancy
- Relief of back, neck, and joint pain
- Relief of pelvic and pubic pain
- Relief of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
- Minimize symptoms of nausea

The Webster Technique
The Webster Technique is a specific chiropractic assessment and adjustment to the pelvis and sacrum that enables chiropractors to establish balance in the pregnant woman’s pelvis and reduce undue stress on her uterus and supporting ligaments. This balanced state in the pelvis has been clinically shown to allow for optimal fetal positioning. This technique has a high success rate in allowing babies in the breech position to go into the normal head down or vertex position.
Dr. McPherson is certified in the Webster technique and is currently working towards the Pediatric Certification of Proficiency through the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association.
