Well it’s official, we have passed the one year mark for Bluebird Sport & Spine. September 1st 2014 marked our one year anniversary (insert loud cheers here)! One question we are often still asked is regarding our clinic name.

How and why did we come up with Bluebird Sport & Spine? Are Dr. Laura and Dr. Steve avid birders? Is it in reference to the beautiful blue skies of the Okanagan summer? Or did it just work with a cool logo design? And, why the “Sport & Spine” instead of the usual “Chiropractic?” Well folks… here is the story behind the name. In truth, there were several factors that lead us to the end result.

First, all of the location names were already taken (e.g. Vernon or North Okanagan). Second, what we do is a bit different from a lot of other chiropractors in the area (Active Release Techniques®, Graston Technique®, Athletic Movement Assessment® etc.), and we wanted to emphasize that we work on the whole body and not just the spine. Both Dr. Laura and myself have a long background in athletics and we have a keen interest in treating sports injuries, so that is where the “Sport” came in.

Finally, our long-term goal is to have an amazing team of health professionals under one roof, working together, providing exceptional patient care. We took the first step in that direction this spring with the addition of our amazing Registered Massage Therapist, Ashley Nelson! Our team will continue to grow, so having “Chiropractic” in the name may become a bit limiting. Getting back to the “Bluebird” part.

Yes, it did lend itself to a cool logo design (at least we think so). But the real story behind it is; being an avid snowboarder, I always joked with Dr. Laura that on a “bluebird powder day,” I just wouldn’t show up for work. Or maybe I would show up. But, just to put up the “Sorry gone riding – 20cm rule” sign on the front door before heading up to the mountain. So far, last winter at least, she was able to keep me in line.

This year, however, rumour has it she has purchased a pass to Silver Star as well which could spell trouble. So… if you wake up to a huge dump of snow this winter and the skies are “bluebird”… you may just want to call the clinic before you head down for your appointment. Just kidding! Thank you so much for your continued and growing support Vernon, BC! We love being here, and we hope to share many more “bluebird days” with you in the beautiful Okanagan Valley. Both in the clinic and up on the slopes. And there you have it… the story behind our name.

In good health (and praying for snow),

Dr. Steve
